i can never bring myself to buy clothing BUT I FINALLY BOUGHT THIS SHIRTwhen i was but a wee thing i had to do a report or some such on a role model type person and thus started a small obsession with marie curie. mom might have suggested her as my topic, i don't remember. i do remember the thin green cloth-bound hardcover i took out from the library (school? public library? children's? i think it was young-adult-ish) with yellowed library-scented pages. the parts i re-read over and over again were about her childhood and going to gymnasium (my mind helpfully supplies a maroon and gray uniform), and finally going to the sorbonne and trying keeping warm by a kerosene lamp in an unhospitable and cramped apartment, and of course when pierre slipped on the wet cobblestones and got run the fuck over by a horse-drawn carriage. i was also obsessed with cleopatra. this cannot possibly be surprising. i liked the part where she rolled herself up into a carpet. i think i read every book on ancient egypt in the south orange children's library. i was most interested in the ones on ancient egyptian gods, though i forget a lot of the myths. |

new orleans bread pudding with banana sauce recipe from gourmetmade this last night, thoughi only had a regular size muffin tin (and no ramekins) so i just cut each slice of bread into halves and made the whole thing in an 8" by 8" pan this is like within fifteen minutes of taking it out of the oven. this is a good bread pudding. my brother was very appreciative (and hungry). maria and i also made dinner yesterday, a salad with cucumbers and mushrooms, tilapia with butter and garlic, and biscuits! this attempt at biscuits was significantly better than my past attempt at parve biscuits, which just don't try unless you are willing to throw a whole fucking lot of vegetable shortening in or whatever. tilapia! biscuits! |

Brilliant Blue G (BBG) has recently been used in scientific experiments to treat spinal injuries in laboratory rats.[2] It acts by reducing the body's natural swelling response, which can cause neurons in the area to die of metabolic stress. Testing is still in progress to determine if this treatment can be used effectively in humans, although the wide usage of blue dye in everyday life leaves no doubt about its lack of toxicity. The recent tests have administered the dye within 15 minutes of injury, but to be effective in a real-life setting, where it may take time for a patient to reach the emergency room, the treatment should be effective even when administered up to two hours after injury. The only reported side effect was that the rats turned blue.[3][4] |

on christmas i am looking at facebook
before going into the city with my family to watch a romanian movie and go to chinatown for chinese food (being home ain't bad at all) but yeah i'm on facebook and like, it is a solid mass of CHRISTMAS even the non-christians are fussin' about christmas and i guess i am too now! it's weird, especially given where i grew up and how jewish it is, being reminded on a large scale that i am not part of the dominant culture. and that i also don't really mind, christmastime has been really nice this year and i like being in annapolis when the streets are all gussied up (!!!), and everyone baking cookies and shit, and i think part of why i can enjoy christmas so much is because i'm really not a part of it too much, i don't have to stress out about getting together with extended family and buying presents for people &c. |
